The Bró Approach to a Smoother Cup
There’s a lot that happens between a green coffee bean arriving at the roastery and your first sip of the finished brew.
Origin, variety and processing all have an impact on flavour, but one of the most important stages happens much closer to home: roasting.
Our approach combines two roasting techniques using our Loring Smart Roast, helping us create the smooth, clean coffee that has become a defining characteristic of a Bró.
First, Why Does Roasting Matter?
Green coffee beans don't arrive tasting like the coffee you know and love.
During roasting, heat causes a series of changes within the bean that develop its aroma, sweetness, body and flavour. The decisions made throughout this process can dramatically influence the finished coffee.
Roast too aggressively and some of the more subtle characteristics of the coffee can be lost. Get the roast profile right and you can bring out the qualities you want from the beans while creating a balanced finished cup.
That’s where the skill of the roaster comes in.
What Is Dual Roasting?
At Bró, we use a Loring Smart Roast and combine two roasting techniques as part of our approach.
Rather than thinking of roasting as simply making beans lighter or darker, it’s about carefully managing how heat is applied throughout the roast.
Combining roasting techniques gives us greater control over how the coffee develops, allowing us to work towards the flavour, body and finish we're looking for.
Small-Batch Roasting, Locally in County Down
Technology is only one part of the story.
Our coffee is roasted locally in County Down in small batches by our SCA Qualified Roaster & Blender, Gareth.
Small-batch roasting allows close attention to be paid to each roast and helps us maintain the consistency we're looking for from one batch to the next.
It’s a combination of quality beans, specialist equipment and the experience of the person behind the roaster.
It's Not About Roasting as Dark as Possible
One of the biggest misconceptions about coffee is that a darker roast automatically means a stronger or better cup.
Different coffees have different characteristics, and the job of the roaster is to understand those beans and develop a profile that brings out what we want from them.
That could mean highlighting chocolatey richness, sweetness, nuttiness or some of the brighter characteristics found within a blend.
It’s why roasting is as much a craft as it is a science.
From Our Roastery to Your Cup
There are plenty of stages involved in producing great coffee, and roasting is one we're particularly passionate about.
By combining two roasting techniques, using the precision of our Loring Smart Roast and roasting locally in small batches, we're able to create coffee with the smoothness, balance and clean finish that we want from every Bró.
So, the next time you make your morning coffee, there’s a little more going on inside that cup than you might think.
